THE
CREATIVE
BRIEF.

a decolonial, ecofeminist-based programme for branding, comms and culture-makers*
who want to create with intention, lead with authenticity and co-author reciprocal futures.

a decolonial, ecofem' activation programme for branding, comms and culture makers
ready to create with intention, shape new worlds, and lead with authenticity.

dear culture-maker,

your work is
a social dialogue.

You could be a brand strategist, journalist, filmmaker, artist or researcher. A therapist, party-planner, policy-maker, landscape gardener or educator.

Either way, you're a culture-maker.

And whatever your audience or community size; whether you primarily operate online or offline – how you approach, position and express your work contributes to shaping our collective culture.

How you frame your work in the world says something:
About what and who we value, the ideas we celebrate, the concepts we marginalise, the regions we spotlight, the regions we ignore, definitions of success, growth, community and love.
All of it.

The expression of our work becomes part of our collective dialogue: how we negotiate ecosystems or value-systems and decide on which scripts will write the futures we live.

Drawing on decolonial, ecofeminist and West-African indigenous insights, the Creative Brief is a companion
– for orienting your work and fueling your narrative power.

but first,

What do we mean
by 'decolonial'
'ecofeminist'
or 'narrative power'?

Decoloniality redresses the imbalance and subsequent harms caused by the cultural dominance of Eucentric ideologies and power structures.

Ecofeminism links the oppression of women with the exploitation and degradation of the natural world and indigenous people.

Narrative power is the ability to shape social reality, cultural norms, identity, and power dynamics by intentional storytelling, framing, and the transmission of worldviews.

These are deeply entangled.

Many folks aren't aware of this, but the birth of commercial branding in the West, went hand in hand with the need to justify colonialism and promote racist and sexist ideologies that shaped how we treat and extract labour.

Branding and marketing were chosen as the primary vehicles due to their powerful culture-shaping mechanics. But of course their creative power can be wielded in positive direction too.

With this in mind, DBD’s committed to supporting folks to use those same vehicles to contribute to decolonial futures.

Watch this short video

for a little insight into what I'm talking about

(ps. sexism was also a central feature of this era, but is left out of this video which was created in response to a timely conversation on commodity racism several years ago)

we don't live in a man's world. we live in a yang world.

DBD surfaces
the mechanics of
Symbolic power,
to heal the harms of Symbolic Violence.

the marketplace is sacred, as are the arts of branding, marketing and creative expression. they have been used to reorder our economy, which is at its core an ecosystem, one that was supposed to be reciprical. It has becomes extractive. And its narratives that justify that extraction.

This course is about seeding new narratives that work to contribute reciprocity.

tending the roots

the original framework

Dominance culture and the logic of extraction, at a macro level primarily targets Africa and indigeneity more broadly, womanhood, nature and epistemic violence as a form of control.

So these are the lenses you learn this work.

But it doesn't stop there. It helps you to root yourself in the binary framework, with the ability to apply it across domains to everything from how we treat creativity and areas that I perhaps haven't thought have but have arisen for you.

africa

womanhood
& the mother

Roll up your sleeves in interactive sessions focused on real-world tools and strategies.

nature

episteme
& sovereignty

Leave with frameworks, contacts, and ideas you can put to work the moment you're home.

This offers a fractal framework/approach to tackling oppression on micro and marco levels from race, gender and climate violence to how we teach introverts, stillness, intellect and more.

i believe

the world shifts when we become intentional culture-makers

So this is your call-in.

What People from Past
Events Are Saying

Real feedback from founders and leaders who joined us last year.

Aiden Cho

Head of AI Research, Lumen Systems

“Attending this conference was transformative. The hands-on sessions were highly relevant, and the networking opportunities were invaluable. The well-organized event offered fresh perspectives and innovative ideas.”

Isabelle Cruz

Partner, Horizon Capital

"I walked in expecting talks and walked out with a network. The conversations between sessions were just as valuable as the content on stage — genuinely one of the best-run events I've been to."

Tom Whitfield

Founder, Circuit & Soil

"As a founder in the sustainability space, finding a room full of people who actually get the mission is rare. This conference delivered real connections, not just business cards."

HOSTED IN
Los Angeles, California

conference hall

City Hall,

LA, California

Our venue is City Hall on Santa Fe Drive, a space that blends indoor stages with open-air areas, built to feel more like a design festival than a corporate conference.

We started as a conference born from a spirit of independent thinking, and that hasn't changed. The talks, the sessions, and the people in the room bring an energy you can only get by being there in person.
